Coding Dojo has released its list of the most in-demand programming languages for this year.

The list uses the number of open full-time jobs to determine the skills that employers are desperately looking for.

Notably, the top three most in-demand languages have been shaken up. Likely driven by the demand for machine learning solutions, Python is now in the top spot.

Here are the top 10 programming languages by open full-time positions and their ranking change compared to last year (in parenthesis):

  • Python: 68,534 (#2 in 2022)
  • SQL: 57,971 (#3)
  • Java: 57,236 (#1)
  • JavaScript: 48,041 (#4)
  • C: 35,702 (#7)
  • C++: 35,281 (#5)
  • Go: 32,503 (#8)
  • C#: 29,084 (#6)
  • Assembly: 14,866 (#10)
  • MATLAB: 8,504 (previously unranked)

Despite the high-profile layoffs we’ve seen across the tech industry, there are still far more job openings than available candidates.

Around 40,000 people have lost their jobs at giants like Amazon, Meta, and Twitter so far in 2023. However, there are currently more than 375,000 tech jobs needing to be filled in the US alone.

Developers concerned about the headlines can therefore take confidence that there are still almost 10 times as many job openings as layoffs. In fact, 52 percent of laid-off workers have found new jobs with higher pay.
