Google is making it easier for developers to bring their Internet of Things (IoT) apps to cars.

Developers can begin building their IoT apps for cars using driving-optimised templates from the ‘Android for Cars App Library’.

The Automotive OS emulator for Android Automotive OS and the DHU for Android Auto simplifies testing apps for this category.

Interested developers should check out the updated documentation, car quality guidelines, and design guidelines. For additional instructions on building IoT apps, developers can visit Google’s website.

Users of cars with Android Auto will be able to download IoT apps developed with the Android for Cars App Library immediately from Google Play. They will then be able to manage supported IoT systems – such as home security cameras and smart garage doors – using their respective apps, straight from their cars.

To ensure their car-optimised apps are compatible with different systems, developers can access the OEM emulator system images that are downloadable in Android Studio.

Google says that it’s excited to see the IoT apps for cars that developers build. If you’re interested in joining Google’s Early Access Program in the future, you can fill out the interest form here.
