Apple has released the visionOS SDK for developers eager to explore the possibilities of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences for Vision Pro.

While betas and SDKs for other Apple operating systems like iOS and macOS were launched on the first day of WWDC, developers had to wait for the release of the visionOS SDK. This meant that they could prepare their software for the upcoming fall releases but couldn’t immediately start building for the new platform.

Susan Prescott, VP of Worldwide Developer Relations at Apple, said:

“Apple Vision Pro redefines what’s possible on a computing platform. Developers can get started building visionOS apps using the powerful frameworks they already know, and take their development even further with new innovative tools and technologies like Reality Composer Pro, to design all-new experiences for their users.”

The introduction of spatial computing through Apple Vision Pro opens up new opportunities for developers. By leveraging the space around the user, developers can imagine and create novel ways for users to connect, be productive, and enjoy entertainment.

Apple says it’s exciting to witness the creative ideas and applications the developer community will bring to life using this groundbreaking technology.

Karim Morsy, CEO of djay app maker Algoriddim, commented: “The djay app on Apple Vision Pro puts a fully featured DJ system right at a user’s fingertips. With a reimagined spatial interface, anyone can mix their favorite music and apply real-time effects using just their eyes and hands.

“Whether for a beginner or a seasoned professional, djay on Vision Pro transforms the user’s surroundings with stunning environments that automatically react to their mix, enabling them to experience and interact with music in ways never before possible.”

Stephen Prideaux-Ghee, CTO of AR/VR at PTC, said: “Manufacturers can use AR solutions from PTC to collaborate on critical business problems by bringing interactive 3D content into the real world — from a single product, to an entire production line.

“With Apple Vision Pro, stakeholders across departments and in different locations can review content simultaneously to make design and operation decisions. This capability will unlock a level of collaboration previously not possible.”

To facilitate the development process, Apple will be establishing developer labs in key locations such as Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. These labs will allow developers to gain hands-on experience and test their apps on Apple Vision Pro.

Additionally, development teams can apply for developer kits starting in July. Although details about the kits have not been disclosed, they will likely not resemble the final hardware, possibly serving as pre-release models for trusted developers.

The tools provided with the release of the visionOS SDK include an updated Xcode, Simulator, and Reality Composer Pro. Developers can utilise familiar frameworks like SwiftUI, RealityKit, and ARKit to build apps for visionOS.

With the release of the visionOS SDK, developers now have the opportunity to explore the possibilities of Apple Vision Pro and shape the future of AR and VR experiences.

The visionOS SDK, updated Xcode, Simulator, and Reality Composer Pro are available for Apple Developer Program members at developer.apple.com. To apply for a developer kit starting next month, developers can visit developer.apple.com/visionos.
