Unity has officially launched tools for visionOS, Apple’s new operating system for its Vision Pro spatial computing headset. The support will allow developers to use Unity’s development tools and workflow to build immersive experiences for the Vision Pro.
The announcement comes ahead of the Vision Pro headset’s launch on 2 February 2024. Unity’s templates, samples and resources will help developers tap into the headset’s capabilities using Unity’s PolySpatial technology to seamlessly blend digital content with the physical world.
Unity collaborated with Apple on a beta program last year to give creators early access to building apps for the Vision Pro. This enabled studios across industries to be among the first to deliver groundbreaking spatial computing apps.
One of those studios is Light Brick Studios, founded by former LEGO designers, which will launch its critically acclaimed LEGO Builder’s Journey game on the Vision Pro at launch. Light Brick’s technical lead Mikkel Fredborg said Unity’s support “has been very supportive in bringing their well known workflow to a completely new type of system,” unlocking the Vision Pro’s “completely new type of interaction and rendering paradigm.”
Another studio building a Vision Pro launch title with Unity is Resolution Games, maker of popular VR games like Demeo and Blaston. Resolution Games’ CEO Tommy Palm said Unity’s “multi platform support and comprehensive tools for spatial computing development makes it straightforward to leverage our experience” in transitioning existing games to the Vision Pro and its “unique capabilities.”
In addition to games, Unity’s visionOS support is also being used by automaker Audi for an interactive Virtual Exhibit XR showcasing its vehicles’ technology, the TRIPP meditation app, and comedy studio Triband to bring its popular What The Golf game to the new device.
Marc Whitten, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Unity, said: “We are incredibly excited to support developers as they innovate and create in this new era of spatial computing. That is why we are the first third-party platform to offer visionOS support.”
The visionOS support is now available in Unity 2022 LTS for all Unity Pro, Enterprise, and Industry subscribers. Hopefully, Unity’s support for visionOS will help to address those “app absence” concerns.
