Google Play is updating its policies to support “blockchain-based experiences” in recognition of Web3’s potential.

“As a platform, we always want to help developers bring innovative ideas to life. Google Play hosts a variety of blockchain-related apps, and we know that our partners are excited to expand on these offerings to create more engaging and immersive digital experiences with tokenised digital assets such as NFTs,” wrote Joseph Mills, Group Product Manager for Google Play, in a blog post.

“Today, we’re pleased to share that we’re updating our policy to open new ways to transact blockchain-based digital content within apps and games on Google Play. From reimagining traditional games with user-owned content to boosting user loyalty through unique NFT rewards, we’re excited to see creative in-app experiences flourish and help developers expand their businesses.”

Regulations are emerging in most forward-looking economies to support Web3 innovation while safeguarding users. Google is following suit with policies that aim to provide a safe and transparent experience for users while enabling developers to explore new opportunities.

While encouraging developers to leverage tokenised digital assets like non-fungible tokens NFTs to provide content ownership and enhance in-app experiences, Google Play emphasises the importance of user protection and transparency.

Developers are required to clearly disclose the sale or earning of tokenised digital assets to users. Additionally, any promotion or glamorisation of potential earnings from playing or trading activities is prohibited. This aligns with Google Play’s commitment to maintaining user trust and upholding its ‘Real-Money Gambling, Games, and Contests’ policy.

Google Play has closely collaborated with app and game developers throughout the process of updating its policy. By incorporating their feedback and insights, Google aims to support the growth and success of its partners.

Notable industry figures, such as John Linden, CEO of Mythical Games, and Matt Williamson, Senior Engineering Manager at Reddit, have expressed their appreciation for Google’s efforts in promoting responsible blockchain technology usage.

“We really appreciate Google’s partnership in this collaborative effort to bring about innovation in this space and move these new economies forward. We think these new policies are steps forward for both players and developers alike and will positively impact the adoption of new technology while also protecting consumers,” said Linden.

The updated policy paves the way for novel and engaging in-app experiences across the Google Play platform. Developers can reimagine traditional games by incorporating truly user-owned content for the first time and enhance user loyalty through unique NFT rewards.

“At Reddit, we believe in empowering our users by providing transparency and a responsible approach to blockchain-based digital content – like our Collectible Avatars. We partnered with Google to help update their policy, aimed at creating a level playing field that promotes user trust, and responsible usage of blockchain technology,” explained Williamson.

“By setting clear guidelines, we can ensure that our users make informed decisions while enjoying immersive experiences.”

Google’s updated policy on blockchain-based digital content sets the stage for exciting advancements in app and game development.

By fostering responsible innovation and prioritising user trust, Google aims to enable immersive experiences that empower users while supporting developers in building sustainable businesses within the blockchain ecosystem.
